Unfortunately, pregnancy can take a toll on your body, especially your smile. This is why it’s strongly recommended to care for your teeth and gums while you grow your little bun in your oven. To help you do so, Dr. Justin Nichols and our dental team have some tips and information for you.

Our first recommendation is to save your smile from enamel erosion. Enamel erosion occurs when acid attacks the teeth and wears them down. This makes them vulnerable to tooth decay and other dental issues. Your smile is prone to enamel erosion during pregnancy because there is acid in your vomit. So, if you have morning sickness, your smile could be in danger. It’s best to brush your teeth 30 minutes after you throw up.

Our second recommendation is to avoid gum disease as much as possible. Gum disease can affect more than your mouth—it can affect your baby. In fact, gum disease has been found to be linked to premature birth. So, please keep your smile healthy and safe by keeping up on oral hygiene each day and visiting Prairie Dental Center every six months for your regular checkup.
